المستخلص : The present study aimed to investigate the remediation and removal ability of ten bacterial isolates, isolated from sandy and clay contaminated Egyptian soils, against carbofuran. Selected bacteria were inoculated in a nutrient medium supplied with 3 elevated concentrations of carbofuran (1, 2, 10 ppm), incubated at 30 ºC and 150 rpm for 3 weeks. The 10 investigated bacterial isolates exhibited remarkable ability for carbofuran removal at a very fast rate even at the highest concentration. However, this efficiency was a function of carbofuran concentration, exposure time, bacterial isolates and soil type from which bacteria were isolated. Very high removal efficiency [RE%(s)] ranges were obtained; 87.8-100, 83.1-100 and 71.2-97.4% at 1, 2 and 10 ppm carbofuran respectively after 3 exposure weeks. In general, Pseudomonas sp. PS20 isolated from the contaminated sand showed the highest RE% at all the investigated concentrations confirming its high degradative ability towards carbofuran. Most of the investigated isolates exhibited their maximum activity at 1 ppm and gradually decreased till reaching their lowest removal % at 10 ppm such as Pseudomonas spp. Other spp. such as Legionella spp. (environmental isolates) and Arcobacter sp., showed their highest achieved RE%(s) at 2 ppm that declined again at 10 ppm. Regardless bacterial, soil type and carbofuran concentrations, there was a general trend of increasing carbofuran RE% with increasing the exposure up to the investigated time (21 day). Maximum RE%(s) were achieved at the 3-carbofuran concentrations by sandy isolates although also high RE%(s) were obtained by clay isolates. Therefore, it is recommended that the present selection could be efficiently used for bioremediation of effluents and soils contaminated with carbofuran or structurally similar pesticides.
